Chelsea Clinton did not back down after Vanessa Bayer made an awkward joke about her mother, Hillary Clinton, at Variety‘s Power of Women luncheon on Friday.
Taking the stage in New York City, the “Saturday Night Live” cast member introduced the honourees, including Jessica Chastain, Shari Redstone, Blake Lively, Audra McDonald, Gayle King, and Chelsea Clinton, before taking a jab at the former U.S. presidential candidate’s daughter.
“And they all have one thing in common,” Bayer said, as listeners in the room quieted down. “None of their moms are president.” Predictably, the uncomfortable moment was met with groans of disdain from the crowd – a reminder of Donald Trump’s current presidency.
When Clinton later took to the podium, she calmly responded to Bayer’s remark about her mother’s election loss. “Vanessa,” she said, “we may be able to say in this room today that no one’s mother is currently president, but someday, someone’s will be.”
While being honoured for her work with Alliance for a Healthier Generation, a non-profit organization made to create healthier school environments for students, Clinton thanked her mom. “I’m particularly proud and grateful for the example that my mother has always set,” she said. “It’s always better to get caught trying than to never have tried at all.”
