‘Veep’ Stars Respond After Australian Politician Laughed So Hard At Episode That He Knocked Himself Unconscious

Some stars of “Veep” are responding to an Australian politician who injured himself while watching an episode of the HBO political comedy — because he laughed so hard he wound up knocking himself unconscious.

As AP reports, Australian Labor Party MP Graham Perrett was watching “Veep” while eating sushi when one scene caused him to burst into laughter, which then led him to start choking.

“It is a pretty funny show. Some rice went down my airway and I started coughing and choking and laughing at the same time,” Perrett told BBC News. “I ran out of the room, I think I hit a wall and then the kitchen island with a granite top. My wife came in and I was on the floor. I was knocked out for a second or so and there was blood everywhere.”

Perrett shared a post-injury photo of himself on Twitter, pointing to his “Veep”-inflicted stitches:

Once news of Perrett’s experience began going viral, his story eventually made its way to “Veep” star Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who took to Twitter to admit she was a bit incredulous: “I mean, c’mon, I’m actually having a hard time believing it,” she tweeted. “But the real question is — what episode?”

Perrett responded that he was watching the season premiere, specifically the scene in which Congressman Jonah Ryan (played by Timothy Simons) is shown shaving his head in order to garner public sympathy by faking cancer. “Pure gold, your highness!!!” Perrett tweeted back to the “Veep” star, who warned him to “be careful” when watching future episodes.

The actor responsible for the laughing-choking accident also responded on Twitter, with Simons tweeting: “oh my god. oh my god.”

In an interview with Buzzfeed, “Veep” showrunner David Mandel also addressed the incident, issuing a tongue-in-cheek apology.

“I would like to make an official statement on behalf of ‘Veep’ and the United States,” Mandel said. “We would like to apologize to Australia, our key ally in the Asia-Pacific region, for writing something that would cause bodily harm to your people.”

Added Mandel: “You realize if I wrote that Selina Meyer was laughing, got caught choking on sushi and hit her head, people would say, ‘yeah right, that doesn’t happen, you can’t do that.’ It really does seem like something in the show, so I guess I’ll have to wait a year now to use it.”
