‘Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2’ Beats Out Original Movie With $145 Million Debut

Lightning strikes twice and no, it’s not you Thor…

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” raked in an estimate $145 million on opening weekend, beating out the original movie by over $50 million. Director James Gunn’s sequel opened 54 percent higher than the original 2014 superhero sci-fi flick.

The once little-known property has become a blockbuster part of the Marvel empire, thanks in part to a pitch-perfect oddball cast: Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper.

The sequel’s success has in part to do with its May release, as opposed to the original’s August release. “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” is such a juggernaut that no other studio dared to premiere any movies on the same weekend.

But the Marvel property will have tough competition on the horizon in the forms of “Alien: Covenant,” ″Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,” ″Cars 3,” ″Transformers: The Last Knight,” ″Despicable Me 3” and “War for the Planet of the Apes.”

Worldwide, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” has amassed over $427 million as of this writing.
