Phillip Phillips Takes Legal Action Against His ‘Oppressive’ Deal With ‘American Idol’

Phillip Phillips is not happy with his American Idol victor’s contract and he’s taken legal action in a bid to break free of the deal.

The “Home”; singer-songwriter says his deal with the Idol-affiliated 19 Entertainment has been far from ideal. Phillips’ petition with the California Labor Commissioner, reported on by The Hollywood Reporter, reveals that the season 11 winner has been “manipulated”; into performing for free for one of the show’s sponsors. Phillips also claims that he didn’t know the name of his last album until it was announced to the public. The singer’s lawyer calls the arrangement “oppressive, fatally conflicted.”;

“I am very grateful for the opportunities provided to me through appearing on American Idol,”; said the entertainer. “The value that the fans and the show have given to my career is not lost on me. However, I have not felt that I have been free to conduct my career in a way that I am comfortable with. I look forward to being able to make my own choices about my career and to being able to make great music and play it for my fans.”;
