After the birth of their son, Liam Payne and Cheryl Cole ultimately decided to name the child Bear, but it was decision that came with a good deal of debate.
“It was like an internal battle,” the One Direction singer, 23, divulged during an interview with radio show “Total Access”, reports People, revealing he and Cole, 33, did not see eye to eye when it came to baby names.
“I wanted a more traditional name and she wanted a name that was more unusual,” noted Payne.
“And the reason she chose Bear in the end was because Bear is a name that when you leave a room, you won’t forget. And I like that.”
The couple confirmed their son’s unique name after adventurer/TV host Bear Grylls sent them a congratulatory tweet.
And while he may have initially been opposed to the name, Payne admitted that it’s grown on him over time.
“You know what? Now he is Bear,” he added. “When I look at him, he’s just Bear. At first I wasn’t really having it. I was like, ‘I’m not really sure. I don’t really understand.’ Now I look at him and he’s Bear. You become your name as you get older anyway.”
The proud parents announced the birth of their first child on Instagram back in March:
On Wednesday 22nd March Liam and I became parents to an incredibly beautiful, healthy baby boy, weighing 7lb 9 and looking like a dream. Although he still doesn't have a name he is already stealing hearts. We are all madly in love and overwhelmingly happy with our little arrival. Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers around the world. A day that now has a different meaning to me forever 💙
