Emma Stone and Steve Carell are heading back to the 1970s for their new dramedy.
Fresh off her Oscar win for “La La Land”, Stone stars as World No. 1 tennis player Billie Jean King in the real-life story of the 1973 tennis match that pitted her against ex-champ Bobby Riggs, played by Carell.
With a worldwide audience of over 90 million viewers, the broadcast was one of the most-watched sports telecasts in history. But not all of the action took place on the court; in addition to sparking an international conversation about gender equality and feminism, King was also struggling with her closeted homosexuality, while Riggs had placed his legacy on the line against a woman 26 years his junior.
The film also serves as a “Little Miss Sunshine” reunion for Carell, with Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris back in the director’s chair.
