Donald Trump’s recent commencement address has some eerie similarities between the speech given by Reese Witherspoon’s Elle Woods in “Legally Blonde”.
Jimmy Fallon used his monologue to point out the similarities between the President’s weekend address at Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA and the 2001 law school comedy.
“I watched Trump’s commencement speech and it sounded kind of familiar,” the late night host said on Monday night. “I think it reminded me of Elle Woods’ speech in ‘Legally Blonde’,” he says before showing a clip of Trump’s speech intercut with the movie’s graduation address by Witherspoon’s character.
Trump began his speech by telling students to “chase their dreams” before dipping into familiar territory. Some of his quotes seem to draw directly from the film, quoting Woods’ speech verbatim in the side-by-side comparison.
The audience bursts into laughter at the revelation, as guest Jeffrey Tambor seems stunned at the similarities between the two speeches.
“It’s probably just a coincidence,” Fallon jokes, looking incredulous as an open-mouthed Tambor looks on in shock.
This wouldn’t be the first time a member of the Trump family was caught plagiarizing.
Back in July 2016, Melania Trump was caught in an embarrassing plagiarism scandal after it was revealed her speech at the Republican National Convention lifted parts of a speech made by Michelle Obama in 2008. The Trump campaign later responded to accusations of plagiarism in a statement reading, “In writing her beautiful speech, Melania’s team of writers took notes on her life’s inspirations, and in some instances included fragments that reflected her own thinking. Melania’s immigrant experience and love for America shone through in her speech, which made it such a success.”
