Following its premeire at the Cannes Film Festival last month, Netflix’s monster movie “Okja” has a brand new featurette to introduce audiences to the movie’s lovable monsters.

Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Tilda Swinton, Paul Dano, Lily Collins and Steven Yeun, the film tells the story of a young girl who must protect her friend – a cuddly hippo-like beast named Okja – from a greedy corporation who has set its sights on the creature. Living deep in the woods in South Korea, young Mija (Ahn Seo-Hyun) will do everything in her power to stop Swinton from getting her hands on her best friend.

The first full-length trailer for “Okja” is a mash-up of a cuddly creature feature and the horrors of a genuine monster movie with a terrifying Swinton desperate to get her hands – and mouth – on Okja in order to mass-produce some “f***ing tasty” meat for the world. Director Joon-Ho Bong is a master at blending genres after expertly mixing comedy and terror in his dystopian “Snowpiercer” and South Korean monster movie “The Host”.

“Okja” had its premiere at Cannes, but not without some controversy.

A new rule, for 2018, from France’s National Film Board states that a film is not eligible to compete at Cannes unless it plays theatrically. This year however, “Okja” and another film in the lineup, Noah Baumbach’s “The Meyerowitz Stories”, are going to be exclusively released on Netflix. While this year’s films will be allowed to compete, streaming-only films will be deemed ineligible for consideration at future festivals.

“Okja” will be released on Netflix on June 28.
