Tom Hardy is close to landing the coveted role of Venom in the “Spider-Man” supervillain spin-off.
The star is in the final stage of negotiations to star in the Sony-Marvel movie by “Zombieland” director Ruben Fleischer. According to reports, “The Revenant” star is a big fan of the Venom comic book character, with Variety posting a selfie of Hardy in a Venom t-shirt.
One of Spider-man’s most popular characters since his debut in 1988, Venom is an alien symbiote who needs a human host to survive. In return, Venom gives his host body incredible powers.
Hardy will play Venom’s first-incarnation, Eddie Brock, a journalist who falsely exposes the identity of a serial killer, only to have Spider-Man capture the real criminal. Disgraced and suicidal after his false public accusation, Brock meets the alien symbiote, together becoming Venom and seeking out revenge against Spider-Man.
The “Venom” standalone film will be the second time the character has appeared on screen in recent years. In 2007, he was portrayed by Topher Grace in “Spider-Man 3”.
Though reportedly not a direct sequel to the upcoming franchise reboot “Spider-Man: Homecoming” with Tom Holland, Hardy’s “Venom” already has a release date of October 5, 2018, locked down. It’s not the only one of Sony’s Marvel properties to get some big-screen attention. The studio also has plans to develop a Silver Sable and Black Cat movie from Spider-Man’s roster of characters.
The Venom role will mark Hardy’s second time playing a villain in a superhero flick. Hardy famously played marble-mouthed Batman villain Bane opposite Christian Bale in “The Dark Knight Rises”.
