After the original 2015 comedy “Daddy’s Home” grossed nearly a quarter of a billion dollars worldwide, it made sense for stars Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg to reunite for a sequel. This time around, they’re bringing their on-screen dad, John Lithgow and Mel Gibson along for some laughs.
ET Canada’s Sangita Patel was on the Boston set of “Daddy’s Home 2” to get the low-down on the new comedy and the stars’ alleged Canadian co-star – a taxidermied moose.
“He’s Canadian!” Wahlberg jokingly tells Sangita. “He’s from Halifax.”
In the original film, Ferrell and Wahlberg played a dad and stepdad duelling over a brood of children. Now, their own dads are thrown into the mix in the Christmas-set movie.
“Mel and I are the granddads,” Lithgow tells ET Canada. He stars as Ferrell’s dad while Gibson plays Wahlberg’s father. “Will and Mark are the stepdads and biological dads and just as different as the two of them are, so are we,” adds Lithgow.
There’s definitely a lot of “dad talk” on the set of “Daddy’s Home 2”, especially for Gibson who just became a father for the ninth time. The 61-year-old star and girlfriend Rosalind Ross recently welcomed a son, Lars, in January of this year.
“It’s new again,” Gibson says of fatherhood. “I sit back and give advice. I pontificate from a corner. But I do occasionally get my hands dirty.”
While Gibson is feeling the love at home with his new addition, Ferrell and Wahlberg are definitely basking in their off-screen bromance. The actors have now worked together in three films, including the 2010 action-comedy “The Other Guys”, which, as Ferrell tells Sangita, means they’re BFFs for life.
“Definitely for life. I love this man,” Ferrell says.
Gibson concurs, adding, “Those two guys when they get going, it’s insane. I sat in [on] a scene the other day and was waiting to jump in while they improvised – it went on for five minutes!”
What’s so special about Wahlberg? “We have a very similar physique. I’m just wearing a sweater cause I don’t wanna embarrass him,” Ferrell adds.
The feeling is definitely mutual for Wahlberg, describing his BFF: “He’s strong… He’s long… He’s mean. But sweet and hard.”
“Daddy’s Home 2” hits theatres on Nov. 10.
