Hockey Night in Canada commentator Don Cherry is no stranger to making controversial statements, and some joking comments he made during last night’s broadcast have resulted in a firestorm of criticism on Twitter.
The comments came after colleague Ron MacLean, on location in Newfoundland, remarked that he had just chowed down on a seal burger (seal flipper pie is a traditional Newfoundland dish, while seal meat is a dietary staple of the Inuk people).
In response, Cherry jokingly responded that MacLean ate a “little baby seal,”; adding, “What are you, a savage, a barbarian?”;
Cherry was immediately taken to task on Twitter, with some mocking his comments and others calling for an apology. Here’s a sampling:
Eating seal is barbaric. Now, buy Rock em sock em 97 where grown men punch the face off each other for two hours.

“You had seal?! What are you a savage? A barbarian?”; Don Cherry not being racist

Oh god Don Cherry really did just equate eating seal meat to being a “savage”; and a “barbarian”;. National embarrassment. #HNIC

I’m proud to be Inuk and to be called a barbarian is just unacceptable, #doncherry you don’t have the right to call me or my people that!
