On Friday, CBS announced that Leah Remini would be joining the cast of “Kevin Can Wait”, following her highly rated appearance in the two-part season finale that saw her reunite with her “King of Queens” hubby Kevin James.
The arrival of James’ former sitcom spouse is apparently not good new for his current TV wife; the day after the announcement of Remini’s addition to the show, TV Line is reporting that Erinn Hayes won’t be a part of “Kevin Can Wait” when the show returns in the fall with its second season.
Hayes’ confirmed her departure from the show on Twitter. “True, I’ve been let go from the show,” she tweeted. “Very sad, I had a great experience [on] season one. Thank you for all the support from our wonderful fans.”
According to Variety: “Sources say it was a matter of the show going in a different creative direction, and not a reflection of the actress’ performance.”
In “Kevin Can Wait”, which airs in Canada on Global, James stars as a Long Island cop who has just retired from the force, while Hayes portrayed his wife. In the two-part finale, Remini guest starred as the former police partner of James’ character, who enlists him to pose as her husband in an undercover sting operation.
At this point, it’s not known how the series will address the departure of Hayes’ character, or how Remini’s role will be incorporated into the show on an ongoing basis.
We’ll find out when the second season of “Kevin Can Wait” premieres on Monday, Sept. 25 at 9 p.m. on Global.
