The relationship between Ariel Winter and her mother has been strained in recent years, culminating in the “Modern Family” star’s courtroom victory after suing to become an emancipated minor at age 17, while a 2012 report of abuse in the home led to Winter’s older sister serving as her legal guardian at age 14.
Although the mother and daughter have not spoken in years, Winter is furious over some comments that her mother made to In Touch criticizing her daughter’s clothing choices.
Winter has received plenty of backlash over the revealing, skimpy outfits she wears at award shows, red carpets and in photos she shares on social media, but her mother’s words apparently struck close to the bone.
“She needs to grow up,” Winter’s mother, Chrystal Workman, told the tabloid. “I would tell her to dress properly, be the beautiful person she is. I feel sad that she feels the need to expose herself when it’s not necessary.”
She added: “Ariel is smart, beautiful and talented. She is a legitimate actress. She does not need to do this. She is beautiful with her clothes on.”
This led Winter to respond in a curt tweet (without mentioning her mom by name) indicating there’s been little thaw in their icy relationship.
“What’s sad is that you lie consistently,” wrote Winter. “Also, why is it that you only choose to talk to me through the press? I’m doing just fine.”
Winter took some heat on social media back in May after appearing at a “Modern Family” screening in a skin-tight, cleavage-baring minidress, and responded to haters in a pointed Instagram post.
“Why can’t people just let other people feel good about themselves and do what they want?” she wrote. “WEAR WHATEVER YOU WANT PEOPLE! As long as you feel good about yourself that’s what matters. I know I did. Don’t ever let anyone stifle who you are and how you express yourself.”
