CBC Music announced the Long List for the 2017 Polaris Music Prize for the best album by a Canadian artist on Tuesday.
The Long List features albums by Drake, The Weeknd, Carly Rae Jepsen, A Tribe Called Red, The Tragically Hip, the late Leonard Cohen and many more.
Each Year, The Polaris Music Prize, chosen by a panel of jurors, rewards the best in Canadian music with an award of $50,000 to the winner and $3,000 to each of the other artists who make the eventual Short List.
Today’s Long List was announced by past Polaris nominees Kathleen Edwards and Rolf Klausener, along with jurors Lana Gay and Erik Leijon.
The 10 albums that make it through to the Short List will be announced on July 13, live on CBC Music’sFacebook page, and the final winner will be announced at the Polaris Gala on Sept. 18 in Toronto, livestreamed at CBCMusic.ca.
The Long List represents a significant cross-section of Canadian musical talent, featuring albums released during the 2017 eligibility period, from June 1, 2016, to May 31, 2017. The jury is made up of music broadcasters, journalists and bloggers from around Canada to determine both the Long and Short List, with a smaller pool of 11 jurors choosing the Canadian Album of the Year at the Polaris Gala.
