Moviegoers are used to seeing Hugh Jackman either playing the good guy or fighting for the good guy, but his latest film sees him stepping over the line to the dark side.

In Chappie, Hugh plays a villain bent on destroying a police robot that’s been imbued with artificial intelligence, and is able to think and feel emotions.

As he tells ET Canada‘s Sangita Patel, playing the bad guy for a change was “awesome… so much fun.”

The Tony-winning Broadway star also talks about his endless love for the stage, which grabbed hold of him at an early. The stage, he tells Sangita, “is where I began when I was five. I did Camelot at a school concert.”

All these years later, he admits he’s still enthralled with treading the boards. “I love the community,” he says. “I love the sense of immediacy.”

You can catch more of Sangita Patel’s interview with Hugh Jackman on tonight’s ET Canada, airing 7:30 p.m. ET/PT on Global.
