There’s no denying “Wonder Woman” is the summer’s biggest movie so far, with a current worldwide box office take of more than $570 million, but after two weeks in the #1 spot the DC Comics superhero flick has finally been displaced by “Cars 3”, which zoomed to the top position at the box office in its opening weekend.
The third film in the Pixar series features the return of Owen Wilson as plucky race car Lightning McQueen, and proved to be a draw at multiplexes throughout North America by taking in $53.5 million domestically and $21.3 million overseas, for an opening weekend total of $74.8 million, reports The Hollywood Reporter.
Yet “Wonder Woman” continues to show strength in its third weekend of release, bringing in an additional $40-plus million to capture the #2 spot at the domestic box office.
Meanwhile, the weekend’s biggest surprise was “All Eyez on Me”, with the Tupac Shakur biopic shattering modest expectations to capture third place with a domestic gross of $27.1 million in its opening weekend.
Rounding out the top five is “The Mummy”, which took fourth place with $13.9 million in its second weekend, and the Mandy Moore-starring shark flick “47 Meters Down”, which captured the fifth place position with an $11.5 million domestic opening weekend.
The weekend’s big loser has been “Rough Night”, with the raunchy female-centric comedy garnering a mere $8.1 million in its opening weekend, landing in seventh place behind “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales”.
