Demi Lovato Gets Candid About Child Stardom: ‘I Wouldn’t Start That Young If I Could Do It Over Again’

Demi Lovato is getting real about making the transition from being a child star to a successful mainstream artist.

The 24-year-old singer sat down with YouTube’s head of original programming, Susanne Daniels, on Monday in Cannes, France, where she opened up about her career. Lovato shot to stardom thanks to her role in the Disney Channel’s Camp Rock, which came out in 2008, but she actually landed her first TV role at just 8 years old.

“Starting out at the industry at a very young age was something that I think I look back at, and I wouldn’t start that young if I could do it over again,” Lovato admitted. “I don’t regret anything, but it was difficult transitioning from child star to transforming into a mainstream artist.”

“It’s something that is very challenging, and you have to find your identity,” she continued. “For so long, you’ve been molded into something, and now you’re expected to figure out who you are — very fast — in front of the entire world.”

Lovato acknowledged that she’s still growing.

“It’s definitely been difficult, but it’s been a learning experience and I’m still figuring who I am every day,” she said.

The “Confident” singer also talked about turning 25 in August, and what the milestone age means for her.

“I feel like I’ve lived a lot longer than I actually have,” Lovato said.

“I feel like I went through a lot of stuff growing up, and I went through some challenges and obstacles,” she said. “I felt like, at a period of time, I wasn’t going to work again.”
