With Canada’s 150th birthday around the corner, the Canadian Mint has responded by issuing new special-edition $2 coins that depict a pair of people rowing in a canoe while the Northern Lights glimmer overhead.
Even cooler: the Aurora Borealis part of the Toonie glows in the dark, a unique made-in-Canada feature you’re not going to see on coins from any other nation in the world.
Canada’s new glow-in-the dark Toonie caught the attention of Conan O’Brien, who joked about it in his monologue during Wednesday’s edition of his late-night talk show.

“The Canadian Mint released a $2 coin that that glows in the dark — this is a true story,” he told the “Conan” audience.
The coin, he noted, “is the first glow-in-the-dark currency in the world,” which he used as the stepping-off point for a joke that answers the question: “Is that a role of Toonies in your pocket or are you just excited to see me?”
