International advocacy organization Global Citizen has announced that Justin Trudeau will be among the world leaders attending and participating in the Global Citizen Festival Hamburg, taking place at July 6 in Hamburg, Germany.
The Canadian prime minister will be joined by Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg and Argentine President Mauricio Macri at the festival, which takes place just before they and other world leaders will meet in Hamburg for the G20 Summit.
According to the announcement, Trudeau, Solberg and Macri are all responding to calls from Global Citizens to address and deliver on the Global Goals for Sustainable Development, which urge world leaders to prioritize investments in education, health, development and the global refugee crisis.
Trudeau has been a vocal champion for gender equality in the fight to end extreme poverty, which he demonstrated by co-hosting Global Citizen’s Concert to End AIDS, Malaria and Tuberculosis in 2016.
The festival will feature performances by German and international superstars including Coldplay (with special guest Shakira), Herbert Grönemeyer, Pharrell Williams, Ellie Goulding and Andreas Bourani.
In addition, Demi Lovato, Florian David Fitz, Elyas M’Barek, Hadnet Tesfai, Nikeata Thompson and Wana Limar have been announced as special guest presenters.
“I’m excited to stand with thousands of Global Citizens in Hamburg to reaffirm Canada’s commitment to a fairer, more sustainable, and gender equal world,” said Trudeau in a statement. “The issues we face globally — climate change, poverty and disease — disproportionately affect women and girls. Their voices and experiences must be at the centre of our efforts if we are to find real and lasting solutions. We must keep pushing ourselves to go further and faster on the road to gender equality. This is the message I’ll bring with me to Hamburg.”
In advance of the concert, Global Citizen Ambassador Rihanna issued a challenge to the PM on Twitter, who responded in true Trudeau fashion, advising her that “we’ve got your back!”
