The Spice Girls’ “Wannabe” is one of the most famous pop songs of all time, but you’ve probably never heard it sung quite like this.
W magazine got a slew of celebrities to sing/read lines from the song, then stitched it together into a hilarious festival of spoken-word Spice Girls re-interpretation.
The list of celebrities in the video includes Nicole Kidman, Milo Ventimiglia, James Franco, Claire Foy, Keri Russell, Jodie Comer, Millie Bobby Brown, Alexander Skarsgard, Sanaa Lathan, Brit Marling, Rupert Friend, Johnny Flynn, and Riz Ahmed.
Watch out for Kidman’s seductive reading, James Franco’s Jeff Goldblum-style laugh, and Rupert Friend’s cough.
Of all the participants, it’s “Stranger Things” star Millie Bobby Brown who gets into it with the most gusto, singing and dancing the lyrics. The young actress says she’s “obsessed” with the Spice Girls, which speaks well to their staying power, considering “Wannabe” was released a full eight years after she was born!
And while it might surprise you, Kidman is a Spice Girls fan as well. Asked who her favourite member of the girl group is, Kidman said, “Ah, it would have to be Posh, right? She’s got an amazing life. I wore one of her dresses recently and I was, like, Oh, this is heaven. It had the whole back out of it.”
Alexander Skarsgard preferred Emma Bunton. “Baby Spice? Was that the blonde? Yeah, she was my favourite.”
