Lorde is clearing up her comments regarding her friendship with Taylor Swift after a recent interview.
Sitting down with Australia’s morning show “Sunrise”, the “Green Light” singer cringed when co-host David Koch asked about her Hollywood circle of friends, including Swift’s star-studded squad. “I don’t hang out with these people at all,” she said after explaining that “the second you think too hard about it, you’ll just go insane.”
“You know, you make friends in different places, but I think for the most part I’m not like, calling my idols for advice necessarily,” she added. “The second you think too hard about it, you’ll just go insane, so it’s best to be, like, We’re in Wonderland and it’s just what happens around here.”
The comments come days after Lorde drew criticism for comparing her friendship with Taylor Swift to “having an autoimmune disease.”
“It’s like having a friend with very specific allergies. There are certain places you can’t go together. Certain things you can’t do,” she shared. Lorde issued an apology shortly after backlash erupted online.
Following her paramount success, Lorde was photographed hanging out with Swift, which led to their fan groups instantly naming the Kiwi singer to Swift’s heavyweight squad.
But it seems, according to the interview, that their friendship had fizzled out ever since Lorde retreated from the spotlight to focus on her sophomore album. “’I really withdrew myself from being a public person and went home,” Lorde told Koch.
Unfortunately, it appears Lorde’s comments were misconstrued. The singer took to Twitter on Friday after her comments regarding Swift, her squad and the truth about their friendship, rocked the internet.
In a note, the “Green Light” songstress cleared a few things up. First, her and Swift are still very much friends. “I love her very much,” she said in the note. In the interview, she was being asked about artists like David Bowie and Patti Smith and those are the idols she was referring to who are not her friends.
When it comes to the squad, Lorde makes it clear that it’s not an exclusive club but a group of different people. “Some of whom I know, and some who I’ve never met, like most wide groups of friends,” she said.
For Lorde, it was unfortunate to have to wake up to a story like this. She makes it clear that not only are Swift and her still friends but that they’re as close as ever. “I feel truly terrible that it would ever seem like I wasn’t faithfully her person,” she writes.
“Now go sip a beverage and head out on a walk,” she ends the note.
