Following the news that Still Alice director Richard Glatzer passed away at age 63 on Tuesday after a long struggle with ALS, the film’s star, Julianne Moore has issued a brief statement:

“It was a great privilege to know Richard Glatzer,”; says the actress, who won an Oscar for her role in the movie. “He put every ounce of who he was as an artist and a human being into Still Alice — his fierce intelligence, his wicked sense of humour, his compassion and his love — and it showed in his gorgeous film. Rich loved film because he believed it could be a meditation of who we are and what we truly value — each other. He gave me the gift of this experience, and I will forever cherish it.”;

Glatzer was diagnosed with ALS in 2011, shortly before taking on the challenge of adapting Still Alice for the screen, and his condition deteriorated rapidly. Despite his illness, the director didn’t miss a single day of filming on the Oscar-winning movie.

Glatzer is survived by his husband, Wash Westmoreland.
