UPDATE – March 3, 2014, 7:28pm ET: Actress Elisha Cuthbert and Toronto Maple Leafs players Joffrey Lupul and Dion Phaneuf are threatening to sue TSN over the inflammatory tweet it aired Monday.

The law firm Gall Legge Grant and Munroe LLP has sent a letter to the broadcaster, demanding it issue “a formal apology and pay a significant amount of damages to each of our clients for broadcasting a false and defamatory tweet during their trade deadline show yesterday.”

The letter added, “It is bad enough that there are people who spend their time using social media to publish such false and malicious stories, but it is made much worse when a reputable media outlet like TSN gives broad circulation and credibility to these false stories by republishing them as TSN did.”

Lupul, Phaneuf, and Cuthbert have confirmed they will begin legal proceedings if their demands are not immediately met.

TSN has apologized for airing a tweet about actress Elisha Cuthbert, the wife of Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Dion Phaneuf.

During the network’s NHL trade deadline coverage, a fan’s inflammatory Twitter posting appeared in the crawl at the bottom of the screen. The tweet was an insinuating comment about Elisha and Dion’s teammate, Joffrey Lupul.

TSN quickly took to social media to apologize. “Earlier today, an inappropriate and disrespectful tweet was erroneously aired,” the network wrote on its PR account account. “As soon as it was flagged, we immediately removed it. We’ve reached out to the Toronto Maple Leafs organization and all those impacted to extend our sincerest apologies for our error. It should have never, ever gone to air.”
