Ashley Judd To Misogynistic March Madness Tweets: ‘I’m Pressing Charges’

By Kate Morawetz.

We understand that March Madness comes with its frustrations, but some college basketball fans have taken it too far, blasting Ashley Judd with hate-filled misogynistic tweets.

“Divergent”; actress Ashley Judd happens to be a fan of the University of Kentucky Wildcats. Tweeting in celebration of her alma mater heading into the March Madness tournament undefeated, Judd’s support was met with threats of sexual violence and cuss words.

But not without sharing horrific examples of what some college basketball fans were saying.

Nothing says “I love college basketball”; like blaming a woman for your team’s inability to beat another. Right?

Sitting down with Thomas Roberts, Judd discussed the situation on “MSNBC Live With Thomas Roberts”; this morning where she told him she plans on charging the Twitter users behind the more disturbing threats of sexual violence she received.

“Well apparently I’m a “whore’. I’ve been called the c-word,”; she said. “The way things happen on social media is so abusive. Everyone needs to take personal responsibility for what they write and not allow the misinterpretation and shaming culture on social media to persist. And by the way, I’m pressing charges.”;

The blast against Judd is just the last in a long line of disturbingly hostile and inappropriate behaviour on Twitter towards female athletes and sports journalists and commentators.

In January, World Champion gymnast Beth Tweddle endured a live Twitter Q&A that was rife with misogyny and in 2010, the Spanish press blamed Spain’s defeat on one person: TV presenter Sara Carbonero, who also happened to be the girlfriend of Spain’s goalkeeper, Iker Casillas.

Tweet us – do you think Twitter should censor the language used in its platform or are people just hate-filled idiots?
