Actor Ike Barinholtz suffered a broken neck while filming a stunt for the upcoming movie, “The Pact,” according to a report from PEOPLE.

The scary accident happened on set five weeks ago when Barinholtz was shooting a fall stunt and plummeted from a high platform. The report states that the “MADtv” alum fractured two cervical vertebrae in his neck.

“We knew something was wrong right away,” Barinholtz told PEOPLE, recalling the terrifying situation. “It was scary and was touch and go for a while. Luckily, I’ve had great doctors who have really helped me with my recovery. I do as they tell me.”

The 40-year-old actor, who is married and has two children, is now undergoing the recovery process. The doctors ordered him to wear a neck brace to keep his neck stabilized which will allow his 6th and 7th cervical vertebrae to properly heal.

“I have to wear an incredibly stylish neck brace for a while as the bone heals,” Barinholtz quipped. “It’s a cool look, especially in the summer.”

Always one to see the comical side of the situation, Barinholtz, who plays nurse Morgan Tookers on “The Mindy Project,” is ready to incorporate the awkward-looking brace into the next (and final) season of the hit comedy.

“After the accident, I talked to Mindy [Kaling], and we agreed that the only option was writing it into the show, ” he said, recognizing its comic value. “Luckily, on “The Mindy Project” I play a character who could break his neck falling out of his bunk bed, and it’s completely believable.”

During his interview at TCA this week, Barinholtz revealed he cried during his extremely emotional phone call with Kaling. “She said instantly we’re going to write you in the show, we’re going to make sure you’re safe'” he said.

“I started crying and then there was a beat where she said ‘Do you think it would be OK if Morgan broke his neck while falling out of his bunk bed?’ And we both immediately started laughing,” he revealed.

“We’re very lucky that you got the funniest injury,” “The Mindy Project” executive producer and showrunner Matt Warburton said. Kaling chimed in and compared how the show handles the moment to a “Brady Bunch” kind of scene.

While filming of the new season is already underway, Barinholtz’s recent injury has given him time to reflect. “Sometimes it takes getting hurt to realize how lucky you are to have great people in your life,” he said. “My family has been taking amazing care of me, and Mindy and all the folks at the show have been so kind.”

“Also, many friends have sent lots of food which is great — but I can’t exercise, so in a way, it’s exceptionally cruel,” he joked.

Barinholtz stars in “The Pact” alongside John Cena and Leslie Mann, the movie is scheduled for release next spring. Meanwhile, the final season of “The Mindy Project” will premiere on Hulu in September.
