Channing Tatum is sharing a look at his latest project — but first he needs to track down a VCR.
That’s because the project is a 1983 Romanian cop show called “Comrade Detective”, a favourite of the “Magic Mike” star. In fact, Tatum is so enamoured with the vintage crime drama that he and a star-studded crew of actors have overdubbed it in English so non-Romanians can enjoy it as much as he does.
Or at least that’s the premise of this Cold War-era spoof coming to Amazon Prime, which follows the adventures of detectives Gregor Anghel and Iosef Baciu (Romanian actors Florin Piersic Jr. and Corneliu Ulici) as they clean up the crime-ridden streets of Bucharest.
In the trailer, Tatum receives a hard-to-find VHS copy of the faux-cop show, and sends his assistant to bring him a VCR and a bottle of vodka before he watches snippets of the intentionally cheesy vintage TV series.
In addition to Tatum, “Comrade Detective” also features the vocal talents of Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Nick Offerman, Jake Johnson, Jason Mantzoukas, Fred Armisen, Kim Basinger, Mahershala Ali, Tracy Letts, Bobby Cannavale, Richard Jenkins, Debra Winger, Mark Duplass, Katie Aselton Duplass, Jerrod Carmichael, Bo Burnham and John Early.
“Comrade Detective” is set to premiere on Aug. 4.
