This year’s host of the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards has been revealed, and it’s none other than Katy Perry.
The “Bon Appetit” singer took to social media on Thursday to announce that she’ll be the mistress of ceremonies at this year VMAs, which take place on Aug. 27.
“I’ve been training with @MTV in zero gravity, eating astronaut ice cream, and I’m on a group text with Buzz Aldrin and Neil deGrasse Tyson,” she wrote on Instagram, accompanying a video in which she floats through the cosmos, costumed as an astronaut. “Come August 27th, I’ll be ready to be your MOONWOMAN! Brace for impact, kids 👩🏼🚀”
Not only will Perry be hosting, she’ll also be performing at this year’s VMAs. In addition, there’s a good chance she’ll also be accepting and award or two, given that she has five nominations this year, while The Weeknd also has five nominations. This places the duo in a tie for second place when it comes to most nominations this year, with Kendrick Lamar leading the pack with seven nods.
“We’re thrilled to have global phenomenon Katy Perry as the host and a performer at the 2017 VMAs,” said Bruce Gillmer, Head of Music and Music Talent, Global Entertainment Group, Viacom, in a statement. “She is at the forefront of music culture and the perfect person to anchor this year’s show, which promises to be one of the most diverse and music-filled in VMA history.”
