During last year’s U.S. election, the world tuned into “Saturday Night Live” for a little comedic relief and Larry David’s spot-on impression of candidate Bernie Sanders was a part of that comfort.
Turns out, David’s take of Sanders was great for a reason: they’re actually related!
In this week’s season premiere of of PBS’ “Finding Your Roots”, viewers found out that David and Sanders are, in fact, distantly related.
David actually revealed the news during this summer’s Television Critics Association press tour when a reporter asked him about his distant relative after seeing a pre-release screener of the PBS series in which celebrities learn about their often-surprising family histories.
At the time, David said he was “very happy” to learn about the new relative. “I thought there must be some connection. I love Bernie,” said the “Curb Your Enthusiasm” star, who won an Emmy nomination for impersonating the Vermont senator on “SNL”.
In the clip below from “Finding Your Roots”, we can finally see the priceless moment when David discovered the familiar connection.”You’re kidding!” David tells host Henry Louis Gates Jr., bursting into laughter. “Oh my God! That is unbelievable. It’s true?”
Adds David: “That is amazing. All right, cousin Bernie!” Watch:
