Rob Lowe was joined by sons Matthew and John Owen at a Friday panel during the Television Critics Association press tour, currently under way in Beverly Hills.
The trio was on hand to discuss their new reality show for A&E, “The Lowe Files”, which finds the “Code Black” star and his sons hitting the road to investigate paranormal activity in hope of seeing some bona fide ghosts.
“The show is basically Anthony Bourdain in a blender with ‘Scooby-Doo,'” explained Lowe of the show. “We want to solve it, but if we don’t, it’s not a failure, because the real point of it is fathers and sons on the road making memories.”
The former “West Wing” star also revealed that he actually spoke to a ghost – or at least believes that he did. “There’s a device they use that the theory is it can translate — that the spirits can talk through this device, for a lack of better term,” Lowe said. “Don’t ask me how, don’t ask me the science, I don’t know. John just thinks it’s randomly programmed to say words at any given time, which it could be, but how does it know to say the word… it said the dead woman’s name where she was murdered. Judge for yourself. I don’t want to seem like a nut. I don’t want to end my career here.”
John Owen Lowe explained that he and his brother are skeptics, while their dad tends to have some unusual beliefs — including that the moon is hollow.
In his defense, Lowe explained that particular theory was presented to him by none other than Charlie Sheen. “In fairness, he had pretty good talking points,” admitted John Owen.
“It’s hilarious what he believes in,” added John Owen. “To give him some credit, it’s way more fun to be around somebody like that… When we were growing up, as kids, you gotta imagine, like, “We’re going looking for Sasquatch. Let’s get the baby monitor on the roof and something for aliens,’ whatever it was, whatever ridiculous thing it was that day.”
“The Lowe Files” premieres on Wednesday, Aug. 2.
