This weekend marks the 16th anniversary of “The Princess Diaries” movie and it could mark an important time for the franchise’s future.
Academy Award, Golden Globe, Emmy Award, BAFTA and Grammy Award-winner Julie Andrews said a third film was being discussed earlier this year. The “Princess Diaries” and “Marry Poppins” star told Buzzfeed of possible plans to honour the film franchise’s late director Garry Marshall.
“I think we might do it in honour of him,” Andrews said. “Annie [Hathaway] had an idea that she wanted to pursue about it, and I’m all for it, so if she’d like to.”
Now, the “Princess Diaries” author Megan Cabot has confirmed the possibility of another flick. “Kind of as a tribute” to Marshall, Cabot told Entertainment Weekly. The author did caution, however, that she only knows a script exists: “So, who knows? [It] could happen, as we say.”
So what could a third “Princess Diaries” movie look like? Cabot’s not telling! “I am not allowed to say,” she laughed. “I would love to sit and talk about [it], but I can’t. I’m not allowed. But it’s really more following the movie than the books.”
“I think of them as two different universes,” Cabot said of the movies and the books. “Like there’s ‘The Princess Diaries’ universe that I created, which is, you know, amazing, and the Disney universe, that they created, which is equally amazing. And, you know, there’s fans of both, and fans who actually kind of like both of them at the same time.”
But that doesn’t mean she doesn’t have her own ideas for how the books could translate to different mediums. “Actually, the one thing I’m really hoping for is a musical, so I hope we have a Broadway musical… obviously, somebody has to write the music and lyrics, and I’m not gonna do that because that’s not where my talents lie,” she confessed. “So I’m just keeping my fingers crossed that some day we’re gonna get one of those. That would be so fun.”
Regardless of when or if a “Princess Diaries 3” will hit theatres, fans of the series are ready to revisit Genovia.
