Everyone mourns the loss of a loved one in their own unique way. So when punk rockers Billy Talent lost a member of their extended band family, they wrote a song to help them grieve.
The song — “Chasing the Sun” — is featured on their greatest hits album “Hits,” and is unlike any other Billy Talent single. After drummer Aaron Solowoniuk lost his brother Trevor to a heart attack at the age of 40, creating this song helped the band cope with the sudden loss.
The band has come together to speak exclusively to ET Canada about dealing with the death. Aaron, Trevor’s brother, tells us: “[Trevor] was the best….I’ve never lost anyone close to me… never like a friend, or a family member.”
“Right after we got the news, there was just a kind of outpouring of emotion from everyone,”; recalls guitarist Ian D’Sa, who wrote the track. “And it just translated into a little guitar riff and that kind of grew and blossomed into a song. After the funeral, we were all really affected by [Trevor’s passing] and… I don’t think it was ever intended to be a song or even to be released or anything like that.”
Lead singer Benjamin Kowalewicz adds: “It was a cathartic kind of thing, and Ian, when he played [“Chasing The Sun”] for the first time, just the rough bones and I… I cried….I think, hopefully it will give people something to hold onto and help them through a time and let them know that they’re not the only ones that have gone through this.”
The band has started to move on, even recording new material for their upcoming album at their Toronto recording studio.
“Chasing The Sun” will be released tomorrow on the radio – but ET Canada has your exclusive first look at the music video right here.
