Will Smith is opening up about an incident that taught him to be a better father, sharing the revelation during a candid conversation in Jay-Z’s new “Footnotes of Adnis” video, available exclusively on Tidal.
Joined by Jay-Z, Chris Rock, Bill Burr, Mahershala Ali and Lil Rel Howery during the freewheeling discussion, the “Suicide Squad” star recounts what happened when daughter Willow, then 11, was on tour following the success of her single “Whip My Hair”.
Feeling overwhelmed, Willow wanted to cancel the tour and go home, but her father insisted that she continue and fulfill her obligations.
And then she did something that got his attention. “We came downstairs and she had shaved her head bald,” reveals Smith. “She shaved her head bald in the middle of her ‘Whip My Hair’ tour. I was like, ‘Oh, s**t.’”
That moment, he points out, was a turning point for him as a parent. “I’m looking at that girl and I’m like, ‘Got it. I understand. You will not have this trouble out of me ever again. Let’s go, baby. We can go,’” he explains.
“For me, it was that soldier that was pushing and wasn’t paying any attention whatsoever to what was going on emotionally with this beautiful little creature in front of me,” he adds. “That was the first part of the collapsing of my father’s suit that I was wearing that wasn’t mine.”
