It appears Ariel won’t be part of our world once more.
According to USA Today, ABC has silently postponed and likely cancelled its live version of “The Little Mermaid”.
ABC announced that the TV musical adaptation of the hit 1989 Disney movie was set to air on October 3rd, but it looks like that won’t be happening anytime soon.
According to sources close to the production, it has been dropped as a result of budget concerns. The network had apparently begun production on the sets for the musical and rehearsals were to begin shortly.
ABC’s “The Little Mermaid” joins NBC’s postponed “Bye, Bye Birdie” musical starring Jennifer Lopez that was pushed to 2018. While those musicals may not be happening anytime soon, there are still a few more to look out for.
NBC’s “Jesus Christ Superstar” is still scheduled for April 2018 and the live version of “A Few Good Men” will air next year as well. FOX also has two musicals on the way: “A Christmas Story” and “Rent”.
