James Corden got to sing with one of his childhood heroes, Will Smith.
The first episode of this seasons of “Carpool Karaoke: The Series” is out now on Apple Music, and it features none other than the Fresh Prince himself. James Corden went on Beats 1 with Zane Lowe to talk about the new series and what it was like to have Will Smith as his first guest.
“It was great. Like all of us I just grew up watching Will Smith, he’s just part of the fabric of your life. My worry is with any of these things with these people is ‘I hope you’re gonna be as great as I want you to be.’ He just surpassed that 1 million per cent,” Corden said. “He was sending me emails last night saying what a response he’d got from people and he was saying, thank you for letting me be part of it and I’m like are you joking this is ridiculous.”
Corden also talked about what seems like his incredible memory for song lyrics. “When they’re coming up there’s an element of doing a bit of research on lyrics,” he admitted, “but ‘Boom Shake The Room’ I’ve known since I was 14. ‘Summertime’. Who doesn’t know it?”
Though the latest edition of “Carpool Karaoke” is jam-packed with stars, there was one artist Corden couldn’t manage to have on the show. “I can tell you this we were gonna do a date with Kendrick Lamar,” he said. “We weren’t on air the date he was in L.A. and it all got a bit mixed up, so I hope we get another time to do it. But that’s the only one that genuinely terrifies me. How is it not just me looking at him being like ‘how are you doing this?’ ”
And who else does Corden want to have on? “There’s so many people,” he said. “Everyone says ‘well who could be left?’ and I’m like ‘well we’ve never done Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon, Billy Joel.’ ”
“Taylor Swift, Sam Smith, Foo Fighters are coming back with a new record,” Corden added.
The late night host also had some flattering things to say about John Legend, who he’d also love to have in the passenger seat. “Every time I meet John Legend,” he said, “I feel like he should be the President of the United States.”
Last but not least is the dream karaoke guest, the Queen herself: Beyonce. “We’ll just retire at that point. I don’t know if it’ll ever happen but I love her so much. We’ll find out,” Corden said.
