UPDATE (Wednesday, Apr. 8, 2:21 p.m. ET): Russell Peters accusing Trevor Noah of joke thievery was just a goof, with the two comics laughing about the media brouhaha in a series of tweets.
“OMG I can’t believe how gullible theV media are!”; tweeted Peters about the inflammatory comments he made during a TV interview in Singapore, adding the hashtag. #PeopleWatchSingaporeanT?”;
Joked the soon-to-be Daily Show host in response: “You just cost me the presidency of South Africa. Lol. See you in Vegas. Revenge is sweet. #SomebodyGonnaGetHurtRealBad”;
Presumably, this won’t be the last time these two funny friends prank each other in the press at our expense.

Trevor Noah has been making headlines lately after being named new host of The Daily Show after Jon Stewart exits later this year, as well as for a series of off-colour Twitter jokes that some have deemed sexist and anti-Semitic.
And here come some more! In the latest, one of the world’s most successful standup comics is accusing Noah of being a joke thief — a serious accusation in the comedy community, where standups spend years crafting a persona and honing jokes.
The accuser: Canada’s own Russell Peters, who laid the charges during an interview with Channel NewAsia’s In Conversation With Lin Xueling.
Asked about his feelings on Noah being named Stewart’s successor on The Daily Show, Peters came out with guns blazing.
“He [Noah] is also a thief above it all,”; Peters said. “He has stolen material from [comedian] David Kau, he’s stolen material from myself, you know, whatever — that’s his gig now. Congratulations.”;
Asked if perhaps the jokes may have been “borrowed,”; Peters was steadfast in his scorn. “You don’t borrow in this business,”; he snapped. “If you’re a comedian, it’s just stealing somebody’s underwear and putting it on, it just doesn’t make sense.”;
Peters scoffed at a question about whether his comments reflected any jealousy that he wasn’t chosen for the job. “No, I wasn’t even up for the gig — do you know how much work that is?”; he said. “No, I didn’t want it at all.”;
Trevor Noah has yet to respond.
