There are a lot of Shawn Mendes fans out there who profess that he’s #1, and now the Canadian hit-maker is proving it with his single “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back” capturing the top spot on the Billboard Pop Songs chart.
This marks Mendes’ second appearance at #1, with “Stitches” claiming the top spot for two consecutive weeks back in 2015.
Having just celebrated his 19th birthday on Aug. 8, Billboard reminds us that Mendes is one of only five acts — and one of two male artists — to have two #1 hits before the age of 20 (Chris Brown and Britney Spears each charted three #1 hits before turning 20, while Christina Aguilera and Avril Lavinge each charted two).
Meanwhile, the song has been streamed more than 142 million times since its release in April, and has sold more than 625,000 units.
“Having my songs on the radio in the past couple years is making this one feel different,” Mendes tells Variety, attributing the song’s success to it being a “fusion between today’s and yesterday’s type of music feel,” adding that “the more people hear my music, the more they’re willing to accept it when it comes out. The more they hear my voice, the more they recognize it.”
Fans who can’t get enough of “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back” are in for a treat when Mendes performs the song live at the MTV VMAs, to be held on Sunday, Aug. 27.
“I’m really going for all out rock star vibe up there,” he says of the upcoming performance. “The whole song spews out energy.”
