As controversy rages in the American south over statues of Confederate generals being torn down, a Britney Spears fan has come up with a solution she thinks is a win-win: replace those offending statues with new ones of Spears, a Louisiana native.
In her Change.org petition, Kassie Thibodeaux urges Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards to “do the right thing: Replace the Confederate statues with an actual Louisiana hero.”
Thibodeaux goes on to list some of Spears’ philanthropic efforts, such as raising money for victims of Hurricane Katrina, and even points out that the singer has “proven her strength of character by not only overcoming a highly publicized mental breakdown, but by continuously working towards improving herself. She’s an inspiration to millions.”
At the time of writing, the petition was nearing its goal of 1,500 signatures.
This petition isn’t the only one offering up outside-the-box ideas to replace Confederate monuments, following on an earlier petition calling for a statue of rapper Missy Elliott to replace a Confederate monument in her hometown.
Meanwhile, another petition calls for a statue of Pharrell Williams to be erected in his hometown of Virginia Beach, Virginia, while a hardcore “Golden Girls” fan is petitioning for a statue depicting Blanche, Dorothy, Sophia and Rose in place of a Confederate monument at the Florida Capital in Tallahassee, telling those who sign, “Thank you for being a friend.”
