“That Don’t Impress Me Much” remains one of Shania Twain’s most popular hits, spending 28 weeks on the charts after its release in 1999.
In the song, Twain outlines the various things that don’t impress her much, one of which happens to be Brad Pitt.
Twain has never explained why she chose to name-check the “World War Z” star in the song — until now, revealing all in a Billboard Q&A held at at Spotify headquarters in New York City (which can be viewed in the video below).
“You want to know the truth about this story? I’ve never told this before. I’m going to say it now,” Twain, 51, told the crowd.
“I remember I had a girl friend visiting me and it was near Christmas and we were baking cookies. I was writing this album and there was a scandal of [Pitt] and Gwyneth [Paltrow] where there was naked photos of him [nude pics of Pitt, taken by paparazzi, appeared in a 1997 issue of Playgirl]. And this was like all the rage. I just thought ‘I don’t know what all the fuss is about.’ I’m like, well that don’t impress me much, I mean what is all the fuss?” she continued.
“We see people naked every day,” she added. “That’s really what I thought. I wasn’t picking on Brad Pitt. But that was just the association in that moment and things we make fusses about and whatever. Of course, it could have been any gorgeous guy.”
