“Despacito” may have just tied Mariah Carey’s record of the longest running No. 1 song on the Billboard Hot 100 with 16 weeks at the top, but it wasn’t the song of the summer.
The Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee track may have been at the top of the charts all summer, but fans have other songs in mind.
According to Twitter, the actual song of the summer based on tweets generated belongs to Fifth Harmony. “Down”, the lead track from the group’s self-titled album that was released this month, generated the most tweets of all the songs.
Speaking of Fifth Harmony, former member Camila Cabello came in second with her song “Crying In The Club”, placing in front of “Despacito” for most tweets generated by a song this summer. In at No. 4 was Justin Bieber’s “2U” with David Guetta and rounding out the top 5 is Niall Horan’s “Slow Hands”.
When it comes to awards, “Despacito” has been ignored. At the MTV VMAs on Sunday, the award for fan-voted song of the summer went to Lil Uzi Vert’s “XO Tour Llif3″.
