Numerous celebrities have come forward to pledge their time and money to help victims of Hurricane Harvey, and Leonardo DiCaprio is joining these efforts.
In fact, the “Revenant” star’s Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation has pledged $1 million as the inaugural donation to its just-established United Way Harvey Recovery Fund, a joint effort between the LDF and United Way.
On Wednesday, a press release from United Way Worldwide announced that all proceeds of the new Harvey Recovery Fund would go directly to support those who have been impacted by the hurricane throughout the Gulf Coast.
“We are incredibly grateful for the generosity of Leonardo DiCaprio and his foundation,” said United Way Worldwide president and CEO Brian Gallagher. “Responding to Hurricane Harvey requires the best of all of us — and that’s what this gift represents. United Way’s Harvey Recovery Fund will provide much-needed help for the communities along the Gulf Coast where lives have been changed forever.”
This isn’t the first time the Oscar-winner’s foundation has stepped in to provide aid for disaster relief, having given donations to the victims of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, the 2010 earthquake in Haiti and Hurricane Sandy in 2012.
“United Way and other organizations are doing so much to help the victims of this tragedy,” added Terry Tamminen, CEO of the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation. “LDF has been committed to climate-related issues and environmental projects since 1998. We support efforts to build climate resilient communities and protect vulnerable wildlife and ecosystems across the planet, and have supported disaster relief and victim funds in the past. We hope others will step up and support the United Way and other organizations.”
Prior to the $1-million donation from DiCaprio’s foundation, Sandra Bullock donated $1 million to the American Red Cross, while Rachael Ray’s foundation donated $1 million to animal rescue efforts stemming to the hurricane. Other stars who have donated to Harvey relief efforts include P. Diddy, Ruby Rose, Ellen DeGeneres, Fall Out Boy, Kevin Hart and Miranda Lambert.
