Fans of Simon Cowell’s short-lived Fox incarnation of “The X Factor” watched vocal duo and real-life couple Alex & Sierra win the third and final season of the singing competition back in 2013.
The duo — consisting of Alex Kinsey and Sierra Deaton — went on to release their debut album the following year, 2014’s “It’s About Us”, which they followed up with an EP, “As Seen on TV”, released in September 2016.
However, the pair has been concealing a big secret from fans: they haven’t actually be a couple for some time, and on Friday took to social media to announce they were ending their professional partnership following the breakup of their relationship.
In a joint statement released on Twitter, the pair reveal that “our romantic relationship ended over a year ago… But as everyone does know, we’ve been best friends forever and really tried to keep A&S going. However, we’ve arrived at a place where it feels better to branch out rather than continue making music together,” reads the message.
“This last album and tour were hard on our hearts,” they admit, thanking their fans for sticking with them. “No band lasts forever, whether they dated or not, but we will cherish every memory, and our love for you will most certainly last forever.”
Finally, they remind that “we are real people behind the screen you’re looking at, so keep that in mind before you say anything and please respect our privacy.”
The tweet was met with an overwhelming display of support and empathy from fans, which did not go unnoticed by Deaton and Kinsey.
While they didn’t elaborate on their individual future plans, fans can still relive their final performance on “The X Factor” after being crowned season three’s champs. Watch:
