“Big Brother” is back on Global! Each week ET Canada will be interviewing the latest houseguest evicted from the house.
Matt Clines is perhaps the poster boy for “Big Brother 19” in the sense that if his picture were on a billboard, you would walk right by it without noticing because there is nothing eye-catching or appealing about it whatsoever. His passive gameplay and follow the herd mentality is the summation of a season completely lacking in energy and colour. Let’s put it in a context that Matt would appreciate: if he were cereal he’d be Bran Flakes – basic and flavourless. Although some people enjoy Bran Flakes so perhaps that’s unfair on the wheat based breakfast snack.
It’s not shocking that Matt decided to give up his shot at the $500,000 for a woman he met 72 days ago, even earning himself a penalty nomination to ensure his lovebird’s safety. He’d checked out of the game back in Week 3 and put all his eggs in the Raven basket. It’s unclear what first drew the two together; perhaps Raven was drawn to Matt’s dazzling orange vest, maybe Raven’s fanciful claims reminded Matt of Ally Sheedy in “The Breakfast Club”. What is clear is that the inseparable pair were the last showmance in the house and therefore the obvious next targets on Paul’s hit list.

It didn’t require much persuasion to get Head of Household Jason to nominate “Maven” and rally the votes to send Matt packing. For as brain numbing as it is to watch, Paul has done an excellent job of appeasing each pair left in the game: Matt & Raven, Jason & Alex, and Christmas & Josh. Each duo feels comfortable with the BB18 veteran and believes he has their best interests at heart. The one person in the game Paul is unable to control is Kevin, the streetwise Bostonian. How do you bargain with a man who brushes his hair with the same brush he uses to clean his teeth? Not since Shannon Dragoo in BB2 has a toothbrush been used in such a controversial manner.
The problem is that when Paul can’t control someone, he shuns them, turning them into the house pariah and encouraging hostility towards that person. Unfortunately, this week the game crossed the line from strategy into straight up gang mentality. Live feed watchers will have seen the houseguests continually bad-mouthing Kevin, the eldest person in a house full of youngsters, with Jason, in particular, making some disgusting comments under the guise of a “joke”. As if this season wasn’t already hard to stomach, the recent ugliness has dragged it further into the gutter. It’s as if someone has gone up to that Matt billboard and graffitied it with lewd drawings.

There is hope that Kevin can hang on and make it to Final 2, providing at least some semblance of a happy ending to this godforsaken season. But realistically, we should all expect Kevin to follow Matt into the jury house next Thursday.
ET Canada caught up with Matt to talk about hinky votes, that orange sleeveless t-shirt, his feelings for Raven and his favourite types of cereal.
Hey, Matt. When Jason put you and Raven on the block earlier in the week, did you believe you were safe, and if so, what do you think went wrong?
Between Paul and Raven, they were pretty optimistic that we were going to be safe, but I was never fully convinced. I watched Jason play the entire season, and I knew that he was close with Kevin as well so, when he put Raven and I up, I felt pretty good. Unfortunately, that latter feeling ended up being accurate. I had literally gone on the block for him twice, and Alex once, I was very loyal to Jason and unfortunately, that was not a smart move.
Other than your blow up with Jason this week, you’ve played a relatively quiet and low-key game. Do you think you played too passively?
No, I don’t actually. I’m an extremely non-confrontational person, and it’s not an area where I excel, and it’s not a strength of mine, so if I were to have played more aggressively, I don’t think it would have been an advantage to me. So no I don’t think it’s something I should have brought out earlier.
There was a lot of talk about who cast the two votes for you last week. Did you ever get to the bottom that? Who do you think did it and why?
Obviously Jason did admit that he was one of the votes and I was 100% positive that he was one of the votes. Originally I thought one of the other votes was Kevin, but we didn’t get to the bottom of the second vote, but the reason we didn’t was very strategic. I’m 99.9% sure that the other vote was Alex. But I did not want to call her out on that, because going into next week, when I left I wanted Alex to be 100% comfortable with the fact that Raven and I wanted Kevin out of the game and we didn’t blame her at all for what happened.
Onto more serious concerns. What are your top five favorite types of cereal and why?
Favorite: Reese’s Puffs
Second: Cap’n Crunch
Third: Lucky charms
Fourth: The S’mores cereal
Fifth: Honey Bunches of Oats with almonds
Sixth: Cinnamon Toast Crunch
Obviously I love cereal and love kids cereal, after one of my bodybuilding shows I would consistently eat boxes in one sitting. Why I just think it’s beautiful combination between the sugar and the milk and the consistency. It’s just amazing!
Final question, what do you love more – that orange vest or Raven?
Definitely Raven because I literally left the orange Texas shirt with her in the house. That’s a great shirt; I think I bought it for $3 or $4, literally like 15 years ago, I have no idea how it’s made it this far. I hope nothing happens to it while it’s in the house without me.
