Jim Carrey Makes Some Bizarre Comments About His Bizarre NYFW Interview: ‘I Don’t Exist’

By Sylvia Ogweng.

Jim Carrey served up one of his most awkward interviews to date while attending a New York Fashion Week party last week.

The comedian, who was dressed to impress in a navy, patterned tuxedo, graced the Harper’s Bazaar party red carpet with his chic self and jaded attitude on Friday.

“There’s no meaning to any of this,” he told E! News’ Catt Sadler. “So I wanted to find the most meaningless thing that I could come to and join and here I am.”

The ICONS by Carine Roitfeld party, which celebrates iconic figures of the fashion world, saw the likes of Selena Gomez, The Weeknd, Gigi Hadid, Kim Kardashian West, Winnie Harlow, Adriana Lima, Nicki Minaj, Cindy Crawford and many more fashionable stars in attendance.

“I don’t believe in icons,” Carrey said. “I don’t believe in personalities. I believe that peace lies beyond personalities, beyond invention and disguise, beyond the red ‘S’ you wear on your chest that makes bullets bounce off.”

Later, Carrey was interviewed by W magazine and was asked about his odd statements, and he wound up offering some even stranger ones.

“We’re a bunch of ideas cobbled together to look like a form. There’s a body and there’s a mind, but the body is part of the field of consciousness, just dancing for itself and it’s no different than a plant or a chair or your phone — it’s all one thing. Because we are sentient, there’s a consciousness, and we have to deal with this thing we create, like a fortress of ideas around it. So we say, ‘This is my name and this is my heritage and this is my nationality and here’s my hockey team and these are all of the things that I am.’ That’s the mistake,” he said.

The only way to avoid that mistake, he added, “is to step into the river of tears and the sorrows of your life. The things that everyone is avoiding with everything from drugs to drink to sex and gadgets and whatever else you can distract yourself with, all of it is designed for you to never stop going and moving and, for god sakes, not feel the abyss. Don’t allow yourself to feel the abandonment and pain that you’ve suffered. And I’ve done it; I’m through it. I’m sure there will be things that happen again, but I realized that by letting myself fall into it completely, that it’s not to be feared. Death is not to be feared.”

He added: “I have no depression in my life whatsoever. I don’t have meds, I don’t have supplements, I don’t have anything. I’ve got a couple of fish oils a day and the rest of it is just good diet and a little bit of exercise and understanding that I don’t exist.”

When he was reminded that wearing a Tom Ford jacket was a strange choice for someone New York Fashion Week as the “most meaningless thing that I could come to,” he compared himself to a character in a video game: “You don’t have to believe this character exists — it’s a f**king avatar on the gaming grid! Today I had extra points so I got a cool jacket to dress my avatar in,” he added. “I have cool weapons, too! Cool weapons on the game grid.”

His eyebrow-raising words echoed the commencement speech he gave at Maharishi University of Management, where he received an honorary doctorate in 2014. According to the institution’s website, it is the “home of Consciousness-Based education, where all students practice the Transcendental Meditation.”

“I didn’t get dressed up,” he added. “There is no me. There’s just things happening. [This world] is not ours…We don’t matter.”
