As Hillary Clinton continues to make the rounds plugging her new book What Happened, one passage in the failed presidential candidate’s book focuses on the treatment she received by supporters of her opponent, Donald Trump, who was prone to whip crowds at rallies into a frenzy with calls to “Lock her up! Lock her up!”
In fact, Clinton looks back at the abuse hurled at her and feels reminded of an iconic scene in HBO hit “Game of Thrones”.
“It’s not easy for any woman in politics, but I think it’s safe to say that I got a whole other level of vitriol flung my way,” reads one passage in What Happened (via The Independent).
“Crowds at Trump rallies called for my imprisonment more times than I can count,” writes Clinton. “They shouted, ‘Guilty! Guilty!’ like the religious zealots in ‘Game of Thrones’ chanting ‘Shame! Shame!’ while Cersei Lannister walked back to the Red Keep.”
While pondering the first takeaway from that passage — Hillary Clinton watches “Game of Thrones”? — there’s more to digest in the following paragraph, in which Trump supporters are described as “almost medieval.”
“As Susan Bordo, a Pulitzer Prize–nominated gender studies professor, put it in her book The Destruction of Hillary Clinton, ‘It was almost medieval.’ Mary Beard, the Classics professor at the University of Cambridge, observed that this venom harkened back to an even earlier time. One popular image among Trump supporters, found on everything from T-shirts to coffee mugs, depicted Trump holding up my severed head, like Perseus from ancient Greek mythology, lifting high the head of Medusa.”
For those who haven’t seen “Game of Thrones”, Clinton is referring to the season-five scene below, in which Cersei Lannister is forced by a powerful religious leader with a fanatical following to atone for her sins by walking naked through the streets of King’s Landing while citizens hurl abuse (and rotten food) at her. As she walks, a member of the religious order follows one pace behind while ringing a bell and repeatedly chanting “Shame!”
Meanwhile, Clinton is continuing her What Happened media blitz, and next week will see the former Secretary of State make her first appearance on late-night TV since the election when she drops by “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” on Tuesday, Sept. 19, airing at 11:35 p.m. ET/PT on Global.
