Patrick J. Adams revealed this week that the backlash from posting a photo of himself with his “Suits” co-star Meghan Markle led to him quitting social media.
The throwback photo in question, which pictured Markle (a.k.a. Prince Harry’s girlfriend and Adams’ on-screen fiancee) giving Adams a friendly peck on the cheek, was misconstrued by several media outlets, he told Esquire magazine.
“Ross and Rachel — the next generation” he captioned the friendly “Suits”-inspired post, which was shared in honour of Markle’s 36th birthday. The photo left many speculating that Adams might be competing for Markle’s affections.
“[Last month,] I posted this old photo I had found of Meghan and I on set. I went to bed, and woke up in the morning and realized ‘Oh, yeah. I live in a world where you can’t post things about Meghan,’” he told the magazine. “I had this onslaught of people retweeting the thing, people thinking it was a recent picture, and I just thought, What the hell is going on?”
Adams emphasized the context of the post, assuring readers that it was a harmless moment between the actors. “It was such an innocent moment of sentimentality that was twisted into something totally different. It made me feel like… Why put myself through this? We’re like brother and sister, it’s not like it was lurid or anything, but it just became a story that people wanted to talk about.”
“I’m not good at [social media], I overthink every post that I put out and the ramifications and who’ll be listening and how it’ll be received,” Adams added.
