Melissa McCarthy was best known for playing Firefly Inn chef Sookie on “Gilmore Girls” prior to her breakout role in 2011 comedy “Bridesmaids”, but a new trailer for long-unreleased comedy film proves she was delivering comedy gold a decade ago.
In the trailer for improvised mockumentary “Cook Off!” (above), McCarthy plays a hapless cook in a faux TV cooking competition, demonstrating the impeccable slapstick skills fans have known and loved in films such as “Spy” and, of course, her brilliant impersonation of former White House press secretary Sean Spicer on “Saturday Night Live” (for which she recently won a well-deserved Emmy).
“Cook Off!” premiered at the Comedy Arts Festival in 2007 but is only now receiving a limited theatrical release (it will also be available on demand).
In addition to McCarthy, the comedy also features Wendi McLendon-Covey (“The Goldbergs”), Louie Anderson (“Baskets”), Niecy Nash (“Claws”), Diedrich Bader (“Veep”), Stephen Root (“Newsradio”) and McCarthy’s husband, Ben Falcone.
“Cook Off!” debuts on Nov. 17.
