For one night only, David Letterman will return to late night TV with his Canadian sidekick, Paul Schaffer.
The former “Late Show” host will be a guest on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” as part of Jimmy Kimmel’s week-long stint in Brooklyn from Oct. 16 to 20. And Letterman is not making his return alone: His long-time Canadian bandleader Paul Shaffer will sit in with Kimmel’s house band, Cleto And The Cletones, for all five Brooklyn shows.
Kimmel is a long-time fan of Letterman, praising his idol and the encouragement the 70-year-old personality had given him in an earlier interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “I just think that he had an awareness of how much he meant to me and he knew that his kindness would go a long way and if he was anything other than that, I would be devastated,” Kimmel said. “So he really was very nice to me; I think mostly because he knew I needed that.”

He even revealed Letterman sent him a box of his old “Late Show” neckties.
“They are long ties, by the way, they’re hard for me. I really have to tuck them in. But I did wear one of his ties and I was quite delighted. In fact on my first show, I was wearing a ‘Late Night With David Letterman’ T-shirt under my clothes.”
This will be Letterman’s second appearance on Kimmel’s show. He was a guest on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” in 2012, but has not appeared on any late night talk show since retiring in 2015.
While he might have stepped away from late night TV, he’s not fully retired just yet. He’ll host an interview show on Netflix, set to premiere in 2018.
