Miley Cyrus is one of the many fans mourning the passing of Tom Petty, who died Monday at age 66 after reportedly suffering a massive heart attack.
The “Voice” coach honoured the late rock icon during a Wednesday appearance on Howard Stern’s SiriusXM radio show, performing a gorgeous, country-tinged cover of Petty’s “Wildflowers”, the title track of his 1994 solo album.
“It’s just really hard for me, watching those people that I grew up with leaving,” Cyrus told Stern of seeing her musical heroes pass away.
“The reason why I chose this song is because it’s hopeful,” she added. “It’s hopeful rather than mourning.”
After finishing the song, Stern responded:“What a beautiful tribute to Tom Petty. He would’ve liked that.” Listen:
