Newt Scamander and his magical case won’t be wreaking havoc on theatres until 2018, but thanks to the film’s Twitter account, fans are getting a first glimpse at the sequel.
The tweet reads “Name of Applicant: Newt Scamander, Profession or Occupation: Magizoologist” and includes a photo of a pending travel application for Newt, played by Eddie Redmayne, and it doesn’t look like it’s going well. Reading “subject uncooperative and evasive on reasons for last trip,” the note is likely a reference to the first film, but what could it entail for the second?
Fans will remember Newt’s last trip, to New York City, that saw the magic zoologist crossing the ocean with his magical case to return one of his beasts, a Thunderbird named Frank, home to Arizona. When some of his creatures get loose, the shy Scamander finds himself in the middle of a wizarding war, pitting him against the Auror Graves, played by Colin Farrell and his search for an Obscurial, a form of dark magic in the wizarding world.
Die-hard Potterheads will know the sequel is setting up to be a showdown between Gellert Grindelwald, revealed in the last film to be played by Johnny Depp and his best friend (but really more), Albus Dumbledore. Stepping into the pointed hat of the famed wizard before he becomes Headmaster of Hogwarts is Jude Law, who is again looking to Newt to help him in a mission that “will also test their loyalties as they face new perils in an increasingly dangerous and divided wizarding world.”
Expanding on that world, the film will take fans from New York to London and then Paris, featuring some surprising nods to “Harry Potter” stories along the way.
Katherine Waterson, Alison Sudol and Dan Fogler are returning as Newt’s band of merry misfits, along with Ezra Miller who played the young Obscurial Credence in the first film. Zoe Kravitz and Callum Turner are joining the cast as Newt’s long lost love interest Leta Lestrange and his war hero brother Theseus Scamander respectively.
Back in February, creator J.K. Rowling tweeted a photo of the script, sending fans into a tizzy, captioning it “having a beastly day.”
