Ellen DeGeneres first spotted Zully Hernandez when the Las Vegas nurse was playing the slots in a casino, surprising her (on camera, of course) and inviting her to be a guest on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show”.
In the wake of Sunday’s mass shooting, however, Hernandez’s visit to the show — which was initially intended to see her only in the audience — took on new meaning, with DeGeneres inviting her to appear on her talk show couch.
Speaking from her perspective as a nurse, she told DeGeneres that Las Vegas hospitals “need blood desperately,” acknowledging how moved she was to see people stepping up and helping others after a tragedy.
“It sucks that it takes something like this for people to have the courage to do something good for other people,” she told DeGeneres. “I wish it was all the time.”
After Hernandez became teary-eyed while describing her account of what took place in Vegas, the tears really flowed when DeGeneres revealed she had a big surprise in store: onto the set walked her son (attending college in Florida) and her husband, who works construction in northern California!
Meanwhile, when DeGeneres learned that Hernandez has family in Puerto Rico, she also also pledged to send some help.
